Cumbria Clerking Advisory Service was started in November 2012 in order to work with
Cumbrian Schools to provide successful, efficient, effective clerking to governing bodies who
struggle to attract a clerk.
The service is managed by Sue Glendinning who has served as a governor in Cumbria for more than
20 years and continues to do so.
Sue started as a Parent Governor, then moved to the category
of Community Governor at one of Carlisle’s largest primary schools.
She was chair to the governing body for 10 years, and chaired the Finance and Staffing Committee for 15 years
and the Premises, Health and Safety Committee for 18 years during her time serving on the governing body.
She was Chair of the Staff Appointment Panel for 18 years.
Sue also served as an Associate Member to a small rural school, offering advice and guidance
to a newly formed inexperienced governing body, and returned to the school to take up office as a Partnership Governor
She was Chair of the Finance, Staffing, Premises Committee, Vice Chair of Governors, Safeguarding Governor and Health and Safety Governor,
and served for six years.
In December 2013, Sue was appointed as a Member Governor at Carlisle's largest academy secondary school,
and is Chair of the Finance and General Purpose Committee and is in her second term of office at the school.
Having been through every Ofsted inspection since the inception of the inspection framework,
she has an insight into the workings and relationships essential to achieve outstanding and
good grades and has been part of a governing body to receive both grades.
Sue’s skills as a governor were recognized by Cumbria County Council’s Governor Support
Services Manager back in 2000, and she was invited to act as a consultant for the team
delivering training to governors countywide, and as a mentor to newly appointed chairs of
governing bodies. The opportunity came to join the Governor Support Team as a permanent
member in 2003 when she took up responsibility for schools in the North and East of the County.
Having successfully organized and delivered both generic and bespoke training to governors
and clerks to schools throughout Cumbria, Sue is in a unique position to understand fully what
is required to ensure governing bodies become efficient, effective partners in the leadership
process. As part of this mechanism for success, a good clerk is essential to ensure that
governance runs smoothly in schools.
The opportunity is now available to schools and governing bodies to access a bespoke clerking
service for schools primarily without a clerk but also an advisory service to clerks to enable
them to become confident in their role helping governing bodies’ achieve high standards.
